INTERNSHIP IBIS Project Intern in Monrovia, Liberia
Liberia - Support to the Country Programme Office
Internship with IBIS and IBIS' partners; Support the country programme office in tasks within the education programme, especially in the area of database development and information systems.
Background information
Liberia is in the process of recovering from the 14 years of civil conflict which ended in 2003. At present Liberia is at a cross-roads transitioning from an emergency situation in need of humanitarian assistance to a country in need of long-term developmental commitment. IBIS has been in the country since 2005 implementing the Accelerated Learning Programme (ALP), which is a three-year learning programme that increases access to education for over-aged and out-of-school children and youth, who due to the civil war never achieved primary education.
The Position
The intern will be placed at the Country Programme Office in Monrovia, but will be expected to travel to the programme implementation areas at least once. The intern’s specific focus will be on developing a central database to collate all data collected from the field offices and project activities, in collaboration with programme staff. In addition to this, the intern is expected to develop an effective filing system that could be used as a standard filing system for all IBIS’ offices and programme in Liberia.
Duration
4-6 months from February 2010
Possible activities includes
• Develop a central database to be used by programme staff to input and access statistics and data from project activities;
• Work with the data clerks in the field offices to train them on how to enter their data in the new database system;
• Support in setting up a documentation system for the Country Programme;
• Work with the Administrator (Monrovia) to develop a standardised filing system to enable all staff to better access and input information, resources and data.
Expected outcome of the internship
The intern is expected to produce tangible outcomes in the form of an internship report, evaluation and a country report for future interns.
Skills and demands
• Knowledge of both the theory and practice of development work
• Knowledge/interest in education sector
• Excellent computer skills and knowledge of developing simple databases
• Understanding of administrative procedures and information systems
• Ability to work independently
• Open, flexible and culturally sensitive
• A sense of humour and practical skills
• Strong analytical skills
• Prepared to stay and work in rural settings
• Experience from staying and working in a developing country is an advantage
• Fluency in written and spoken English

IBIS is unable to offer financial support to interns. However, interns will, as other IBIS staff, receive per diems when travelling for work assignments from the post station. IBIS will also be helpful in the process of finding accommodation in Monrovia.
